EUDP LEX Project - Finalized

10/10/2016

Torsional Stiffening of Wind Turbine Blades

After 3 years of dedicated work the EUDP LEX project has come to an end.

The EUDP LEX project has been a successful cooperation between 16 partners across the whole value chain. Throughout the project, the technical focus has been on cross sectional shear distortion and the Bladena technology X-Stiffener™, with the intention to reduce blade damages and drive down the Levelized Cost of Energy.

As other EUDP projects the work has been done through several workshops and individual studies and test, keeping both the theoretical and practical topics at a high industry and research level.

The X-Stiffener™ is the main product developed and demonstrated in test during the project, but also the ongoing work with the Guide2Defect database materialized in an independent company now offering blade statistics on a commercial basis (www.guide2defect.com). In order to be able to set standardized minimum requirements for blade inspections and repair, a set of instructions and report templates called NGIR were developed in close cooperation with the wind turbine owners in the project.

The Final LEX Meeting was held in September 2016 at DTU Lyngby, where project participants presented the results of the work successfully done the last 3 years.

Cutting edge blades
PES caught up with Ryan Lauridsen, CEO at Bladena to find out about the latest developments in blade technology. An important issue in our industry.

PES: Welcome to PES Wind magazine. Thanks for talking with us. Would you like to begin by explaining a little about the background of your organisation and how you currently serve the wind industry?

Ryan Lauridsen: Bladena was founded 5 years ago as a spin off from the Technical University of Denmark and has since then been focusing on further development of the patented technologies and their commercialisation. Our focus is on the structural design of blades and all our work is centred on reducing the failures seen on blades in operation; hence reducing the cost for Operation and Maintenance on blades and so extending their operational life time. We have expert knowledge in blade failures and how to avoid them...
